Chippers, Shredders, Mulchers – Great for Those Nasty Yard Work Chores

    By Flower | May 10, 2009

What do you do with limbs and branches that are too small to cut and pick up? Rather than just throw them away, purchasing a wood chipper or shredder is really your best option. There are a number of different sizes of wood chippers and shredders out there that can take branches and shred them into small pieces. These pieces can then be used in gardens as a decorative and practical way to cover dirt.

Wood chippers can range in size from a small, 3 hp model that you can use in your own backyard, to a large, 1000 horsepower chipper that is pulled behind a truck. Many professional tree trimming companies take a wood chipper along to their work sites to chop up the branches that are left over from a job. These wood chips are then loaded into a dump truck and sold for use in gardens, which gives them another source of revenue beyond just the tree trimming.

A mulcher is a similar machine which takes leaves and other garden debris and breaks it down. This mulch is then used most often to add to composters or allowed to age, then it can be used as nutrients for soil.
